The Critical Evaluation of Lexis+ AI in Legal Practice
In the rapidly-evolving world of legal technology, AI-powered tools like Lexis+ are gaining attention. However, a recent evaluation by a distinguished law professor revealed serious shortcomings in the application’s proficiency.
Through extensive testing, the professor was met with results that pointed to the tool’s inefficiencies. Alarmingly, non-existent legal statutes were cited, yet these lacked any hyperlink for verification. Even more troubling were headnotes being duplicated word-for-word and misleadingly labeled as case summaries. Furthermore, there were notable legal inaccuracies within the generated content, raising significant concerns.
While such errors might be somewhat expected in some free, broadly-focused AI applications, their presence in a specialized legal platform is unsettling, particularly as the product is poised for introduction to law students who are still in the foundational stages of their legal education.
To address these issues, the professor has proposed several best practices to enhance the responsible integration of AI in legal education and practice, aiming to ensure technology serves as a reliable partner in the pursuit of justice.
